6 DEC - 3:30PM - MOUNTAIN-TOP TEMPLE

After lunch we went to the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep Rajvoravihara. Legend would have it that a white elephant wandered into town (Chiang Mai). When given some Buddhist relics to carry, the white elephant proceeded to climb the mountain to the top, and then fall down dead. The locals decided to build a temple here.

The ride up the hill was long and windy, so Cathy thoughtfully handed out garlic pills to those of us whose lunch wanted to get out before the ride down.

The place was filled with metallic gold Buddha statues with the gold leaf flaking off. Was reminded of the Isaiah reference to a man cutting down a tree, making a fire for dinner with one half, and building a little god to worship with the other half. It had an eerie feel.

The view of the Chiang Mai basin was fantastic. Filled with grey-white two story buildings.
